The STAR method

For "Tell me about a time…" questions, structure your answer so it's clear and concrete. STAR keeps you from rambling.

S

Situation

Set the scene briefly. Where were you, and what was going on?

T

Task

What were you responsible for? What needed to happen?

A

Action

What did you actually do? This is the heart of the answer — use "I", not "we".

R

Result

How did it turn out? Use a number if you can (sales, time saved, customers).

A worked example

Question: Tell me about a time you handled a difficult customer.

  • S A customer came into our shop in Douala upset that an order arrived late during a busy holiday week.
  • T As the person on the counter, I had to calm the situation and find a fair fix without losing the customer.
  • A I listened fully, apologised, checked the delivery record, and offered a same-day replacement plus a small discount on their next order. I followed up the next day on WhatsApp.
  • R The customer stayed with us and even referred two friends. My manager later used my approach as the example for the team.
